Betty Josephine (Knotts) Shuck, age 90, of Hanover, passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Thornton Terrace. Born January 14, 1923 in Parsons, West Virginia, she was the daughter of Marie Auvil Knotts, who preceded her in death. Betty (BJ) graduated from Berea College, Berea, Kentucky in 1944 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and math. During World War II she married Glen Bonsett and worked in Los Angeles as a research chemist. After moving to southern Indiana, she completed a Master of Arts Teacher (MAT) in French from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. From 1957 to 1983 she taught high school math in Versailles, and Vevay, English at Southwestern High School, then French for twenty years at Scottsburg High School. Betty enjoyed many trips to Europe with students and others. Playing bridge, golfing and gardening gave her great pleasure. She was an enthusiastic sports fan, especially enjoying IU basketball. In 1983, she married Dr. William A. Shuck, retired surgeon of King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison, Indiana and retired to Lake Placid, Florida where she lived until 2001, returning then to Hanover to live at Thornton Terrace. The family wishes to thank those who lovingly cared for our mom at Thornton Terrace, as well as Janet Morecraft, Kathy Spurgeon and Hospice of South Central Indiana. Preceding her in death was her beloved second husband, Bill Shuck. She is survived by three daughters, Sandi (Jack) Webster, Andrea (Bill) Tarpley, and Candi (Marc) Gray. She had seven grandsons, one granddaughter and five great-grandchildren. The family will gather at a later date to celebrate her life. At her request no services are planned. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to: The Family of Betty Shuck, 7474 Riverside Drive, Madison, IN 47250.
