Mary E. Wright, age 93 of Madison, passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2014 at the Our Hospice of South Central Indiana in Columbus, Indiana. Born June 20, 1920 in Eminence, KY, she was the daughter of Clarence and Celestine (Long) Smith. On December 17, 1938 in Carrollton, KY, she married Walter L. Wright. Retiring in December of 1980, she had worked at the U.S. Shoe Company starting in Vevay in October of 1950 then she moved to Madison in 1973. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking for her family, quilting, reading, and watching soap operas. When she and Walter retired, they enjoyed camping and traveling, especially to Florida. Survivors include a daughter, Patsy Newland of Waverly, IN; a son, Michael Wright and his wife, Diane of Madison; a daughter in law, Judy Wright; nine grandchildren, Steve (Stephanie) Leep, Gina Holland, Kelly (Steve) Seel, Kathy (Scott) Lynch, Gus (Shelli) Wright, Missy (Tracy) Weatherford, Sean Smith, Katie (Clint) Frazier and Megan (Gary) Mouser; one sister, Patricia Richards of Buckner. Mary also had 12 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, Rosie Magner; a son, Leslie E. “Les” Wright, a grandson Curtis Wright, two brothers, Robert Smith and Clarence Smith, Jr., two sisters, Virginia Hammond and Audrey Hutchens. Visitation for Mary will be on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 from 4:00pm until 8:00pm and from 10:00 am until time of service at the Vail Funeral Chapel, 117 Holt Drive. Pastor Brian Teater will conduct services at the funeral home on Thursday at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at the Vevay Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Curtis Wright Scholarship Foundation care of the Jefferson County Community Foundation or to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
