Verla Knight

Verla Marie Knight, 80 of Scottsburg Indiana passed away Saturday February 10th. Verla was born November 12, 1943 in Brinkley Arkansas to her parents the late William Fred Hodges and Bertha Edna Brann Hodges. Verla was a 1961 graduate of Clarendon High School in Clarendon Arkansas. She was married for 57 years to her late husband Harry “Butch” Knight in 1961 in Shelby County Tennessee and made a home in Beaufort South Carolina prior to setting up her homestead in Scottsburg Indiana.

Verla was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Scottsburg where she spent 10 years as the church treasurer and an active member for 41 years. She was a wonderful seamstress and crafts woman, making clothes for her children and Barbie doll clothes. She donated many of her crafts to support her church. She had a passion for genealogy and spent time researching her and her husband’s family history and educating her children and grandchildren on their heritage. She provided for her family by growing, harvesting, and preserving food from her massive garden each year. She passed down her green thumb, crafting skills, and cooking techniques to her children and grandchildren by always teaching them her “cat head biscuits”, yeast rolls and southern cooking. Verla was adored by her family and set the standards for being a good, compassionate, and loving person. She also worked at Scottsburg Plastics and later retired from Genesis Plastics, where she was loved by so many.

Verla was preceded in death by her parents William and Bertha Hodges, husband Harry “Butch” Knight, sister Freda Batte and sister Eunice Simpson.

Verla is survived by her son Russell Knight of Henryville IN, daughter Rainey Knight Duvall ( Kerwin) of Jeffersonville, daughter Teresa Knight of Jeffersonville and nephew Tony Smith. Five grandchildren Anthony Gross, Aret Gross ( John), Cody Duvall, Cailee Duvall, and Landon Kessler. She is also survived by two sisters , Deloris Young and Carolyn Quigley (Mike), as well as many beloved nieces and nephews .

In leiu of flowers, the family requests you make a small donation to the Alzheimer Association (Alz.org) or Dementia society (dementiasociety.org).


Visitation: Saturday, 11am – 2pm, February 24 2024 followed by a memorial service at 2pm, at Christensen-Hoagland Family Funeral Home, 80 N 1st St., Scottsburg IN 47170. 


 Private family burial will take place at a later date at Oaklawn Cemetery in Brinkley Arkansas.
