Virginia Lee Heckman

Virginia Lee Heckman, age 87 of Seymour, went to be with her Lord on February 29, 2016 surrounded by family at her home. Born April 8, 1928 in Bloomington, Indiana, she was the daughter of Wayne and Fern (Murphy) May. On August 22, 1964, she married Robert Heckman.

A 1944 graduate of Arsenal Tech High School in Indianapolis, Virginia thought she wanted to be a nurse until she decided she hated the sight of blood. So, she started her career at C.L. Lesh Company as a secretary, and later worked for many years as a bookkeeper at Mel-Rain Corporation.

Virginia then moved to Seymour and worked at the Quill & Frill and The Other Place. Later, she partnered with Ann Hess to open The Enchanted Village.

Virginia loved spending time with family, especially her grandchildren, reading, traveling, playing bridge, and euchre and was an avid follower of the Indianapolis 500. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Seymour.

Survivors include her husband of almost 52 years, Robert of Seymour; daughter, Terri (Randy) Malone of Greenwood; son, Fred (Robin) Heckman of Seymour; grandchildren, Lauren Heckman, Michael Malone and Taylor Heckman; she is also survived by Robert’s sister and brother in law Clarence and Emilyann Grelle of Greenwood who introduced Robert and Virginia many years ago.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne W. and Fern (Murphy) May; brother, Morris May; sister-in-laws, Thelma Ruth Mize and Altamae Lill and her favorite aunt, Frieda Oxnam.

Visitation will be Friday, March 4th from 5:00pm until 7:00pm and then on Saturday from 10:00am until 11:00am at Woodlawn Life Celebration Centre in Seymour. Services will be held Saturday at 11:00am at the funeral home followed by burial at Riverview Cemetery. Memorials can be made at the funeral home to the donor’s choice.
