Betty Richey

October 24, 1939 — June 30, 2025

Scottsburg

In loving memory of Betty Jo Feltner Richey, who departed this earth on June 30, 2025, at Baptist Health Floyd in New Albany, Indiana. Born on October 24, 1939, in the quaint town of Hazard, Kentucky, Betty was a radiant spirit whose warmth and compassion touched the lives of all who knew her.

Betty's legacy is woven into the fabric of her beloved family, whom she cherished dearly. She is survived by her devoted son, Robert Dale Richey Jr., and his wife, Lisa of Scottsburg, Indiana, along with her daughters, Carolyn Applegate, and her husband, Tim of Scottsburg, Indiana and Linda Davis, of Jeffersonville, Indiana. Betty also embraced her step-daughter, Melissa Allen, and shared her life with her beloved companion of 17 years, Robert Kimmick.

As a true matriarch, she proudly celebrated her brood of 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, nurturing them with love and kindness that embodied her generous spirit. Her sweet smile and infectious laughter will remain etched in their hearts and memories.

A revered head cook at Scott Villa Nursing Center in Scottsburg, Indiana, Betty's culinary prowess spread delight far and wide. Known for her signature chicken and dumplings, fried chicken, bread dressing, and an assortment of homemade pies, her kitchen was a sanctuary where the essence of home cooked meals flourished. Cooking was not just a duty for Betty; it was an expression of love, a way to gather family and friends around the table.

Betty's life was rich with color and vibrancy, reflected in her deep love for farming, nature, and animals. A proud coal miner’s daughter, she carried the pride of her upbringing in Kentucky wherever she went. As the seasons changed, so did Betty's enthusiasm, which flourished in her love for the great outdoors and her passionate support for IU basketball later in life. Her personality sparkled with sweetness and generosity, as she continually put the needs of others before her own, leaving a lasting imprint of kindness wherever she roamed.

Betty's heritage is honored by her siblings, including her brother, Jim Feltner and his wife, Linda, sister Patsy Hazelwood, and sister Jackie Russell with her husband, Lloyd.

While she leaves behind a plethora of joyous memories, her presence is also felt in the hearts of those she loved and lost, including her father, Farris Feltner, her mother, Oda Napier Feltner, and her devoted husband of over 40 years, Robert Dale Richey Sr. She also mourned the passing of her sons, Marvin Dale Richey and Thomas David Richey, and brothers Gene, Charles, and Bill Feltner. Also a granddaughter, Kayla Applegate.

Family and friends are invited to honor Betty’s remarkable journey during visitation on July 3, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM, to be held at Christensen - Hoagland Family Funeral Home, located at 80 N 1st Street, Scottsburg, Indiana. There, we will celebrate the essence of a beloved woman whose spirit remains alive in every smile shared and every gathering around the table she so adored. She will be laid to rest at Scottsburg Cemetery immediately following.
