Dexter Lynn Steele, a beloved pillar of the City of Seymour, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his residence on May 13, 2026, leaving behind a legacy etched deeply in the hearts of all who knew him. Born on December 7, 1958, in the very town that he cherished, Dexter’s life was a tapestry woven with unwavering devotion to his community, family, and country.
A proud 1978 graduate of Seymour High School, Dexter’s love for his hometown ran as deep as his passion for football—a sport he played from fifth grade through high school, embodying the spirit and camaraderie of his youth. His service extended far beyond the playing field; Dexter honorably served the United States Army for over seven years, a testament to his steadfast commitment to his country.
Upon returning home, Dexter dedicated twenty-five years to Duke Electric as a Meter Reader while simultaneously serving the people of Seymour with unrelenting love and passion as a City Councilman for over seventeen years. His leadership and dedication were instrumental in the construction of the new Seymour Police Station, a structure that proudly bears his name among others—a lasting monument to his impact on the civic fabric of the community.
Dexter was a true outdoorsman, whose soul thrived in the embrace of nature. He found joy in fishing, camping, and playing Corn Hole, while his love for the mountains and the outdoors was complemented by his avid support of IU basketball and football. His enthusiasm even extended to the thrill of the casino, where he delighted in placing bets on the horses of his choice with the same vibrant spirit he brought to all pursuits.
In every role Dexter embodied a special kind of warmth and generosity. His comical, joking nature and wonderful sense of humor were legend among friends. The bear hugs he gave—big, enveloping, and full of heart—were often delivered exactly when needed, extending comfort effortlessly. Everyone who met Dexter felt seen and valued, for he had the rare gift of making each person feel truly special, irrespective of their circumstances.
His passion for nurturing the next generation was evident in his wholehearted commitment as a coach. Whether on the basketball court, football field, or softball diamond at Brown Elementary, St. Ambrose, Courtland, or Seymour Middle School, Dexter was more than a coach; he was a mentor and a beacon of hope. Through sports, he instilled character and confidence in countless children, showing them their worth and the limitless potential within them.
Family and friendship were the cornerstone of Dexter’s existence. He found joy and solace in the company of his best friends Curt, Jackie, and Wayne—relationships that enriched his life immeasurably. He leaves behind a loving lineage to carry forward his spirit: daughters Jaime Richey of Commiskey, Indiana; Rachel Otte of Columbus, Indiana; and Cassie Steele, along with her husband Jon - Michael Mesic of Columbus, Indiana. His sisters Teresa Joetta Wilson and Leandra Steele, both of Seymour, remain devoted family anchors. The warmth of his legacy continues to shine brightly in the eight grandchildren—Braelynn, Owen, Bryson, Karder, Lincoln, Shaylee, Willow, and Sophie—and three great-grandchildren—Leona, Ivory, and one precious little one on the way. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and a host of lives he touched in his own special way.
Dexter’s journey was also shaped by the memory of his parents, William “Lum” Steele and Opha Barger Steele, who preceded him in death, watching over him from beyond.
A Christian by faith, Dexter’s life was a testament to love, service, and joy until the very end.
