Diane Marie Horak Shell, age 82, a cherished mother, sister, and friend, graced the world with her presence on November 24, 1943, in Valparaiso, Indiana. She departed from this life, surrounded by the warmth of family, at her residence in Seymour, Indiana, on December 27, 2025. Her legacy is woven into the hearts of all who had the profound privilege of knowing her.
Diane's life was marked by devotion, a kindhearted spirit, and an unwavering work ethic. For over thirty years, she dedicated herself to Cummins Diesel, where her hard work and commitment not only earned her respect but also exemplified her character—a woman who believed in providing for her loved ones with an unyielding resolve. A proud graduate of Valparaiso High School in 1961, Diane’s education was merely a stepping stone to a life rich in compassionate experiences.
Her faith as a Christian guided her throughout her journey, and she found solace and community within the Assembly of God. Diane was a magnet for connection; she never met a stranger, and her love for people was unmistakable, creating bonds that felt like family. As a loving mother, she was a source of unwavering support and encouragement, nurturing her children with the same fierce love that fueled her soul. Diane took immense joy in her role as a grandmother, celebrating life through the laughter and spirit of her eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, wrapping them in her generous embrace.
Diane's enthusiasms painted her world with vibrant colors. She delighted in the serene beauty of nature, finding refuge and inspiration at the beach and the ocean. Her affinity for the simple joys of life was profound, often expressed through meticulously chosen treasures uncovered during her visits to goodwill. Whether savoring the whispers of the waves or strolling among the trees, she immersed herself in the world around her, sharing that love with her children—Jim Fox and his wife Ginger of Salem, Indiana; Sarah Fox of Seymour, Indiana; and Carrie Andres and her partner Jamie of Floral City, Florida.
Though Diane is survived by her beloved children and grandchildren, she is preceded in death by those who shaped her life: her father, John Horak; her mother, Lydia Pfledderer Horak; and two sisters, Janet Gant and Joan Corneil. Heartache is felt also for her daughter, Susan Smith, who left this world far too soon, but whose spirit undoubtedly remains intertwined with Diane’s legacy.
As we celebrate the life of Diane Marie Horak Shell, let us honor her remarkable journey—a tapestry rich with love, laughter, and the unwavering strength of a woman who lived fully and fiercely. Her memory shall forever illuminate the lives she touched, reminding us that love knows no bounds, and goodness endures beyond measure.
In keeping with her wished the family has chosen cremation.
Daniel and Betsy Christensen have been entrusted with the arrangements.
