Helen Faye Nichols Stein, age 98, born on July 2, 1927, in Georgetown, Indiana, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2026, at the Lutheran Community Home. Her remarkable life was a tapestry woven with threads of resilience, devotion, and boundless love that touched all who knew her.
Helen’s early years were shaped by the challenges of the Great Depression, a time that instilled in her an unwavering work ethic and a spirit of ingenuity. Growing up in a large family, she and her sisters crafted their own dresses from feed sacks, a poignant testament to their resourcefulness. Their afternoons were spent quilting—each stitch a symbol of perseverance—as they created beautiful handmade quilts to sell or trade. Helen’s family also traded homegrown eggs and cream with traveling hucksters, building a foundation of skills that defined her lifelong talents in sewing, gardening, cooking, and canning. Known especially for her coffee cakes, cookies, and pies, Helen’s culinary gifts brought comfort and joy to many, though she remained ever her own toughest critic.
A proud graduate of Hanover High School in 1945, Helen attended Martinsburg and Deputy grade schools before embarking on a career path marked by dedication and versatility. She lent her skills as an inspector at the Crothersville shoe factory, worked at RCA Corporation in Bloomington, and served in the cafeteria at Seymour Junior High School. Her journey took her to the Sears catalog desk as a teletypist before she found her long-term professional home at Amoco in Seymour, Indiana. There, she faithfully served as the plant manager’s secretary for 21 years until her retirement in 1992.
Beyond her work, Helen’s life was illuminated by the profound partnership she shared with her beloved husband, Roy Dale Stein. Their story began at Sharon Hill Church in Lexington, Indiana, where youth group meetings blossomed into a love that would span over 79 extraordinary years of marriage. Together, Helen and Roy nurtured a family and sustained a foundation of faith, regularly attending Reddington Christian Church and Hayden Christian Church—cornerstones of their spiritual life.
Helen’s family was her heart’s true delight. The depth of her love extended to her three sons: Roy “Michael” Stein and his wife Bev of Vallonia, Indiana; Larry Dale Stein of Seymour, Indiana; and David Ryan Stein and his wife Kim of Seymour, Indiana. She was the proud grandmother to nine grandchildren—Jay and his wife Kathy, Jerry, Gregory, Kevin and his wife Eryka, Kimberly Lloyd, Ryan T. and his wife Brielyn, Stephanie D. Pridgen and her husband Judson, P.J. and his wife Sommer, and Richie. Her legacy of love now extends through eighteen great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, each carrying forward the spirit of a woman who cherished her family above all.
Helen’s personality was marked by unconditional love paired with a feisty spirit. She possessed an extraordinary gift for service, always putting others before herself with a heart full of kindness. Her passions included playing cards, fishing, and tackling crossword puzzles—simple pleasures that mirrored her grounded and joyful approach to life.
She is preceded in death by her parents, William C. Nichols and Helen Hensley Nichols, as well as her siblings Ray Wallace Nichols, James “Harold” Nichols, Thomas Nichols, Eunice Nichols Bierly, Ernest “Leon” Nichols, Elmer Nichols, Laura “Francis” Nichols, Dorothy Hash, Virginia Wilson, and Geneva Love.
A visitation to honor Helen’s life will be held on June 17, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Christensen Family Funeral Home, 311 Holiday Square Road, Seymour, Indiana. This will be followed by a funeral service at the same location at 12:00 PM. Family, friends, and all whose lives were enriched by Helen’s enduring spirit are invited to join in remembering a woman whose story remains a shining testament to the power of love, faith, and perseverance.
She will be laid to rest immediately following at Riverview Cemetery.
Helen Faye Nichols Stein will be remembered not only for the lifetime of hard work and devotion she displayed but also for the timeless warmth and strength she offered to her family and community—a legacy as enduring as the quilts she once stitched with loving hands.
