Jim "Coach" Barley, born in Marion, Indiana, on February 14, 1934, made an indelible mark on the lives of many as a devoted basketball coach and an esteemed member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. He attended Marion High School, graduating in 1952, before furthering his education at Indiana University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1956.
Mr. Barley enjoyed a fulfilling career as a basketball coach in Scottsburg, where he was known not only for his strategic acumen on the court but also for his commitment to nurturing young athletes. His passion for the sport and his community was combined with a profound sense of integrity, evident through his Christian faith. He is remembered as an honest and generous man, always willing to lend a hand to those in need, and cherished as a wonderful father.
In addition to his love for basketball, he found joy in hunting, fishing, playing Scrabble, and participating in games of Euchre. These hobbies reflected his zest for life and his ability to connect with family and friends through shared experiences.
Jim served in the U.S. Army Reserve, showcasing his dedication to his country. He is survived by his beloved wife Mary, and his daughter Kris, who reside in Scottsburg, Indiana. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his son, Tony Barley, one brother, Bill Barley, and 2 sisters, Betty and Jackie.
Mr. Barley passed away on May 22, 2025, in Scottsburg, Indiana, at his residence surrounded by his family. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. The family invites friends to pay their respects on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Christensen - Hoagland Family Funeral Home, located at 80 N 1st Street, Scottsburg, Indiana, 47170. Private services and burial will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at Estates of Serenity in Marion, Indiana.
The family requests memorial donations be directed to the Scottsburg High School Athletic Department.
