John Douglas Gilbert, age 86, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on September 25, 2024 at Broward Health, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was born on October 8, 1938, in Xenia, Ohio, where he began a journey that would span eight decades filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support for those around him.
John dedicated over 60 years of his life as an autobody repairman, honing his craft and taking pride in his work. His dedication not only to his profession but also to his family made him the rock upon which many relied. A 1957 graduate of Scottsburg High School, he exemplified hard work and perseverance, traits he instilled in his children and grandchildren.
John was a former member of New Providence Baptist Church, demonstrating his faith through actions that reflected kindness and generosity. He also took pride in being a member of the NRA, a testament to his love for the outdoors and the freedoms he cherished.
John’s interests were diverse; he had a profound love for classic cars and enjoyed traveling across the country, experiencing all it had to offer. The holiday season brought him immense joy, particularly Halloween, when he delighted in dressing up and handing out candy to children in the neighborhood. Movie nights were a cherished pastime, with a particular fondness for both scary films and westerns, reflecting the variety of his vibrant personality.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Mary Lindsey (McCombs) Gilbert, who has been his steadfast partner through life's many adventures. Together, they built a family that flourished through their love and dedication. John’s legacy continues with his son, Christopher Gilbert, and his daughter, Debbie Man, and her husband, Dan. His grandchildren, Jayson Abad and his wife, Courtney, and Rachel Abad.
John was preceded in death by his father, Clabe Gilbert, and mother, Dorothy (Douglas) Gilbert.
The family will receive friends on October 5, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. at Christensen - Hoagland Family Funeral Home, located at 80 N 1st Street, Scottsburg, Indiana. He will be laid to rest at New Providence Cemetery.
