Joseph Theodore Hennekes Sr., age 85, a stalwart in the community and a beacon of kindness, departed this life on September 30, 2025, at Norton Clark Hospital in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Born on September 18, 1940, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Joseph lived a life marked by devotion to service, both in his professional endeavors and personal passions.
For over 27 years, Joseph dedicated himself to law enforcement, embodying the very essence of integrity and bravery while serving his fellow citizens. His commitment to safety and community extended beyond the badge; he volunteered as a firefighter and EMT for more than 31 years, risking his own well-being to save others, showcasing a level of selflessness that inspired all who knew him.
Education played a fundamental role in shaping Joseph’s character. He earned an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from the prestigious University of Cincinnati, laying the groundwork for a career devoted to protecting and helping others. For four years, he also lent his compassionate spirit to Christensen - Hoagland Family Funeral Home, where he continued to honor the lives of others with dignity and respect. A proud member of the American Martyrs Catholic Church in Scottsburg, Indiana, for over 27 years, his faith remained a cornerstone of his life, guiding his actions and reinforcing his unwavering support for those around him.
Joseph was not only distinguished by his career but by his deep-rooted convictions as a champion for Pro Life since 1973. He proudly served as a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, revealing his commitment to faith and community service as he took on the roles of Past Faithfull Controller and Faithful Navigator for 12 years. His leadership within Right to Life Scott County, where he served as President, and as a board member of CRADLE marked him as a true advocate from “the womb to the tomb.” Furthermore, his passion for inclusivity shone through his position as Outreach Coordinator for the Special Olympics, creating avenues of joy and camaraderie for countless individuals.
Known for his loving, kind-hearted nature, Joseph had an extraordinary ability to make anyone feel at home. He was a man of the people, never failing to forge connections and friendships wherever he went. His outgoing personality made him a cherished figure in his community, evoking warmth and reverence from acquaintances and friends alike.
Joseph found solace and joy in many hobbies, often spending cherished moments fishing, hunting, and golfing.
He is survived by his loving son, Joseph T. Hennekes Jr. and his daughter, Holly Hennekes; Step daughters, Jayn Bobick and husband Thom, and Debbie Biddle. He took great pride in his family, including three grandsons who will carry forth his legacy. Through his life partner, Pamela Hundley, he shared a bond that epitomized love and companionship.
Joseph joins deceased family in rest, his parents, James and Alberta (Loebker) Hennekes, his wife of over 40 years, Eileen Hennekes, his brother, James Hennekes Jr., and his sisters, Joyce Marie Hennekes and Donna Luebbering, leaving behind fond memories that will be cherished forever.
Visitation will take place on Monday, October 6, 2025, at Christensen - Hoagland Family Funeral Home in Scottsburg from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, with a rosary to begin at 7:00 PM. Visitation will take place again on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at the Catholic Church of the American Martyrs from 10:30 AM until 11:00 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will commence immediately following at 11:00 AM with Father Brian Esarey officiating. He will be laid to rest at St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery.
