Mary Lee Carey, age 75, our beloved matriarch, began her remarkable journey on May 10, 1949, in the quaint town of Borden, Indiana. She embraced life with a heart full of love and a soul that radiated kindness. Mary departed this world on January 18, 2025, at the Baptist Floyd Hospital in New Albany, Indiana, leaving behind a legacy woven with compassion and joyous memories.
A cherished member of the Mount Eden Christian Church for over two decades, Mary displayed her unwavering faith through her actions. Her spirit was enveloped in warmth, embodying the traits of a caring, kind, and outgoing lady. With every interaction, she made others feel special, fostering connections that transcended the bounds of time and place. Those who were graced by her presence are blessed to carry forth the kindness she instilled in them.
Mary's love for life extended beyond the walls of her home. Her adventurous spirit found solace in the vibrant landscapes of Gatlinburg and the sunny shores of Florida. Whether exploring new destinations or throwing dice at the casinos, she reveled in the experiences life had to offer. A keen bowler, passionate fisherwoman, and lover of the great outdoors, Mary took pleasure in the simple joys of nature and recreation, always sharing her zest for life with her family and friends.
Mary was a devoted mother, leaving behind her precious children, Beth Mills and her husband Timothy of Charlestown, Indiana; Jeff Carey of Scottsburg, Indiana; Daniel Carey of Scottsburg, Indiana; and her sister, Sandra Wentworth of California. Together, they were the recipients of her unconditional love and guidance, the very treasures of her heart. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Mitzi Stoner, Cheree Bowman and her husband Tony, Raven Carey and Anthony Carey. Also, ten great grandchildren.
Her absence will be profoundly felt by those she leaves behind, but they draw comfort in the beautiful memories they had shared. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David Carey, whose presence in her life was a cherished gift, and by her dear parents, Russell Lee and Imogene Fleenor Lee. The family circle is further marked by the loss of her brother, Lloyd Lee; her sisters, Martha Lee and Sherry Lynn Lee; and her niece, Lori Ann Clem.
As we come together to celebrate Mary’s life, we invite all who knew her to honor her memory at the Visitation on January 26, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by the Funeral Service at 1:00 PM at the Christensen - Hoagland Family Funeral Home in Scottsburg, Indiana. She will be laid to rest at Little York Cemetery.
In the hearts of those who loved her, Mary Lee Carey will forever remain a beacon of love, warmth, and spirited adventure, a reminder of the beauty of a life lived fully and passionately. Her legacy, one of caring and kindness, continues to inspire all who had the privilege to know her.
