Michael Thompson, a vibrant spirit whose laughter and kindness filled every room he entered, passed away peacefully at his residence on May 17, 2026, surrounded by his beloved family. Born on August 19, 1951, in Hazard, Kentucky, Michael’s journey through life was marked by dedication, generosity, and a zest for living that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him.
Michael was a master plumber, honing his craft for over two decades with a passion and skill that distinguished him as the best in his field. Even after retirement, his hands and heart remained active; he was always ready to lend his expertise to anyone who called upon him. His wealth of knowledge was a beacon for those in need, and his willingness to help without hesitation was a testament to the man he was—generous to a fault and never meeting a stranger.
For over fifty years, Michael enjoyed attending Immanuel Lutheran Church in Seymour, Indiana, a community where he found spiritual nourishment and lifelong connections. His commitment to this congregation mirrored his approach to life: steady, faithful, and filled with warmth.
He was, above all, a people person. With an infectious grin and an endless repertoire of stories—true or embellished, as he liked to say with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, "I'm telling a story, not writing a paper"—Michael captivated friends and family alike. His humor and infectious laughter created memories that will be cherished forever. Whether on the golf course, by the fishing pond, or at the pool table with his close circle of friends, Michael’s infectious spirit shone brightly. A passionate sports fan, he cheered enthusiastically for the Kentucky Wildcats, Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders, and NASCAR, sharing that joy with equal fervor.
His love for family was profound and unwavering. As a husband of over 50 years, he stood side-by-side with his wife Joyce Von Dielingen Thompson of Seymour, Indiana, through all of life's seasons. Michael was an unfaltering supporter and the biggest fan of his children—Zach Thompson of Seymour, Indiana; Adrienne Gurney and her husband Bob of Flatrock, Michigan; and Margaret Brown of Seymour, Indiana. He delighted especially in his role as a grandfather, adoring his grandson, Severin Gurney. Michael’s brotherly bonds extended through Johnny Thompson of Jennings County, Indiana; Lawrence Thompson and his wife Cindy of Akron, Ohio; Bobby Ray Thompson and his wife Lisa of Austin, Indiana; and his sister Eliza Davis and her husband Bob of Seymour, Indiana.
Though the chapters with his parents, William Thompson and Mabel Deaton Thompson, and brothers Walter, Tunis, Elmer, Danny, and Aaron “Bo” Brown have closed, the legacy Michael leaves is immortal. He also mourned the loss of his son-in-law, Aaron “Bo” Brown, who joins the ranks of those dearly remembered.
Michael’s life was a vivid tapestry of love, laughter, and dedicated service. His generous nature, irrepressible joy, and unforgettable tales will resonate within his community and family for generations. The visitation and funeral service are set to be held on Friday May 22, 2026, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 605 South Walnut Street, Seymour, Indiana, beginning with visitation at 10:00 a.m. and followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Ralph Blomenberg, Pastor Philip Bloch and Vicar Max Johnston officiating. He will be laid to rest at Lutheran Cemetery in Seymour, Indiana.
In mourning his passing, we also celebrate the full and remarkable life Michael Thompson lived—a man who, by his own words and deeds, reminded us that life is less about perfect stories and more about the warmth and laughter we share along the way.
The family requests memorials be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church, 28320 Waltz Road, New Boston, Michigan 48164.
