Robert Joe Smith., born March 5, 1953, in Muncie, Indiana, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by the love and presence of his cherished family. A man whose life was a testament to unwavering principles and heartfelt devotion, Robert’s story is one woven with threads of honor, dedication, and an indelible commitment to those he held dear.

From the very beginning, Robert’s character was shaped by a strong moral compass. Graduating high school while serving his country proudly as a soldier in the United States Army during the Vietnam era, he embodied a profound sense of duty that would resonate throughout his life. Knowledge was a beacon to him—his passion for history and belief that “knowledge is power” reflected a mind ever seeking truth, and his handshake was more than a gesture; it was a solemn bond sealed with integrity. Recipients of his friendship and trust always knew where he stood, as Robert was a steadfast defender of law, justice, and righteousness.

His educational pursuits did not end with military service. Robert earned an Associates Degree in Building Trades from IVY Tech, a practical tribute to his lifelong love of craftsmanship. His hands, skilled and inventive, brought to life his identity as a master tinkerer. Often, designs and creations were never merely completed; he improved upon them, breathing new life into finished work with his unique touch—a testament to a man who saw possibility in every challenge. Family members became accustomed to hurried missions for parts and tools sent by Robert, trusting his unrelenting drive to make things better.

Robert dedicated over three decades of his professional life to Borg-Warner, where diligence and loyalty defined his work ethic. Beyond his career, his heart was deeply invested in community and service. For more than 18 years, he served as a Soldier in the Salvation Army of Brown County, Indiana. This role was more than duty—it was an extension of his generous soul, his joy found not in accolades but in quietly helping those in need.

Outside of his many commitments, Robert found peace in the simple pleasures of nature. He was an avid fisherman, perpetually on the quest for the big bass, relishing the patience and quiet anticipation of each cast. In his later years, his observant eyes delighted in watching the serene dances of deer, turkeys, and the myriad wildlife that graced his surroundings. In each moment, Robert found connection and renewal, appreciating the world’s beauty with a contemplative spirit.

Robert’s legacy is richly carried forward by his beloved wife of 55 years, Rebecca Lamb Smith of Freetown, Indiana, whose partnership enriched the tapestry of their shared life. Their children, Robert J. Smith Jr. and his wife Susan, and Kristi Brummett and her husband Steven, who reside nearby, continue to embody the values instilled by their father. The family grew to include four treasured grandchildren: Brittany Allman; Shaney Smith and her husband Gabe Goldsberry; Kailynn Brummett; and Derek Brummett with his wife Kristi. The line extends to one great-grandson, Gunnar Browning, who carries forward the light of Robert’s enduring spirit.

Robert was also blessed to be one among eleven brothers and sisters, a testament to a life framed by familial bonds that provided strength and continuity. Though some loved ones have passed before him—his father Fate Smith, mother Lela Hunt Smith, and grandson Trever Brummett—their memories remain a sacred part of the story he leaves behind.

The loss of Robert Joe Smith Sr. is not merely that of a man, but of a beacon of honesty, a guardian of truth, and a kind soul who offered both stern guidance and warm laughter. His presence was a steadfast rock in the swirling currents of life, his example a call to live with purpose and compassion. As we reflect on his journey, we are reminded of a life well-lived—a tapestry rich in love, resilience, and the quiet strength of a man who truly believed that every bond counted, every action mattered, and every moment held the promise of something better.

In keeping with his wishes the family has chosen cremation and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Daniel and Betsy Christensen have been entrusted with the arrangements.
