Scott Evans Simms

May 1, 1968 — September 3, 2025

Suman

Scott Evans Simms, age 57, born on May 1, 1968, in Marquette, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on September 3, 2025, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. His departure leaves a significant void in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.

A craftsman at heart, Scott was an excellent carpenter with a remarkable ability to construct a house from the ground up. He took immense pride in his work, infusing each project with his unwavering dedication. Beyond the walls he built, Scott nurtured his passion for mechanics, seamlessly fixing cars and embracing the challenge of any problem laid before him.

For thirteen years, he was a member of the Living Word Apostolic Church, a place where his love for the Lord blossomed. Scott carried within him a zest for life that resonated in every story he shared. As an excellent listener, he captivated audiences with tales from his own experiences, always delivered through his unique lens—one that was undeniably strong-willed, unapologetically honest, and refreshingly humorous. A natural jokester, he thrived on making others laugh, often playfully considering himself a “big stud.”

Scott's interests were as wide-ranging as his talents. He reveled in the simple pleasures of catfishing and hunting, cultivating a deep love for horses and cows, embracing the essence of life on the land. Yet, amid his many pursuits, his greatest pride rested undoubtedly in his family. Scott was a fearless supporter of his grandchildren, his heart swelling with affection as he attended their events, delivered prizes, and enveloped them in warm hugs that would linger in their memories.

Scott leaves behind his beloved wife of 32 years, Denise Johnson Simms of Sunman, Indiana, who stood steadfastly by his side through life’s journey. He is also survived by his son, Rex Smith, and life partner Kayla Teer of Dillsboro, Indiana; son, Jerry Neece II of Sunman, Indiana; and daughter, Bethany Dunn, and her husband Eric of Milan, Indiana. The family tree flourished further with the steadfast presence of his brother, Carl "Pete" Mathews and wife Annette of Polo, Illinois; sister, Erin Dryden of Sunman, Indiana; sister, Sandra Howlett of Portland, Oregon; and sister, Gwen Dimmett and her husband Todd of Portland, Oregon. Scott's legacy continues through seven adoring grandchildren—Colton Dunn, Brooklyn Pelfrey and her husband Jordan, Jordayn Dunn, Jayden Neece, Kaidyn Dunn, Lane Smith, and Laikyn Dunn—as well as three great-grandchildren, Braxton, Sawyer, and Waylon.

He was preceded in death by a loving circle of family: his father, Roger Howlett; mother, Mary Jo Simms Mathews; stepfather, Carl Mathews Sr.; maternal grandparents, Mary and Joseph Simms; father-in-law, Roy Johnson; stepfather-in-law, James Moore; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cherished family members.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Living Word Apostolic Church in Aurora, Indiana, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM, with Pastor Jeremy Smith officiating.

Though he is no longer with us, Scott Evans Simms will forever remain etched in our hearts, a testament to the laughter he brought, the lessons he imparted, and the unconditional love he shared with his family. His spirit will endure in the stories we tell, the memories we cherish, and the love that continues to flourish in the lives he profoundly touched.
