Shirley G. (Skaggs) Arthur, born on August 5, 1940, in the gentle hills of Jamestown, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2026, at her cherished home, surrounded by the warmth and love of her beloved family and reunited with her beloved husband on his birthday. Her departure marks the closing of a life quietly lived yet profoundly felt, a soul who carried grace and steadfast devotion through decades filled with faith, family, and simple joys.
A woman of quiet strength and gentle spirit, Shirley was known for her infectious laugh that could brighten the most somber moments. Though reserved, she was a good listener, a steadfast friend, and an anchor to those who knew her well. She embraced the changing seasons with an artist's touch, decorating her home to welcome each new chapter of the year, bringing beauty and comfort to all around her.
For more than half a century, Shirley was a devoted member of the First Pentecostal Church in Brownstown, Indiana. Her faith was not only a foundation but a vibrant part of her every day. As a Prayer Warrior, she lifted many in prayer. She shared her gifts as a Sunday School teacher, a choir singer, and a pianist. At the church in Madison, alongside her beloved husband Lester Dean Arthur, she nurtured young hearts as a youth leader—a testament to her enduring commitment to community and faith.
Her life's work was carried out with humble pride: Shirley cleaned houses and found deep satisfaction in the care and diligence she dedicated to her work. Beyond her labor, she poured love into her hobbies and passions. A talented seamstress, she often crafted clothing for her children. Her scrapbooks told stories of a life richly lived. She nurtured flower gardens and delighted in the delicate art of ceramics. Baking was another joyful expression, especially her prized pies that were eagerly awaited by family and friends alike. With her husband, she shared the simple pleasures of canning and traveling in their RV, creating memories that would endure long after their journeys ended.
Shirley's family was her greatest blessing. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters Beverly Anderson, Patricia Champion and her husband Randall and Deloris Luckey and her husband Brian all of Seymour, Indiana. Her brothers—Glen Skaggs and his wife Randa of Brownstown, Terry Skaggs of Freetown, Eddie Skaggs and his wife Carol of Brownstown, and Michael Skaggs of Seymour—and her sisters Priscilla Sue Noble and her husband Kenny, and Sheila Lucas and her husband Michael, both of Fishers, Indiana, hold her memory close. Her legacy is also carried on by eight treasured grandchildren: Ryan Champion, Travis Anderson, Kyle Champion; Aaron Luckey; Cara and April Anderson; Tara Lowe; and Mindy Velez; as well as seventeen great-grandchildren, each a living continuation of her love and light.
She joins in eternal rest her parents, William C. Skaggs and Ona May (Moran) Skaggs; her beloved husband of 58 years, Lester Dean Arthur; and her brothers Bill "William" Skaggs, Albert Skaggs, Ronnie Skaggs, Leonard Skaggs, Joe-David Skaggs, and Lester Skaggs, whose memories live on within the stories she cherished and the hearts she touched.
The visitation will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at the First Pentecostal Church, 610 S Main St, Brownstown, Indiana, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Following this, a funeral service will commence at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Ron Cox officiating. She will be laid to rest at Houston Cemetery immediately following. Shirley G. Arthur’s life was a quiet melody of love, faith, and devotion—one that will echo in the hearts of many for years to come. Her story is woven deeply into the fabric of all who knew her, a testament to a life well-lived and deeply loved.
