William "Bill" Calloway, a beloved fixture of the Scottsburg community and a master barber whose hands shaped more than just hair for over half a century, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by his cherished family. Born on July 17, 1951, in Scottsburg, Indiana, Bill’s life was one of steadfast dedication, warmth, and an enduring legacy woven into the fabric of the town he called home.
A 1971 graduate of Scottsburg High School, Bill further honed his craft at Indianapolis Barber College, embarking on a career that would span decades. For more than forty years, he worked tirelessly at Corner Barber Shop, where his gentle hands and keen eye for detail earned him not only a loyal clientele but also the admiration and friendship of countless townsfolk. His retirement in 2023 marked the close of a remarkable chapter, but the stories, laughter, and kindness he dispensed daily left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
Bill was a man defined by his character: friendly, humble, kind, compassionate, and extraordinarily generous. He loved people profoundly, and in return, people loved him—a testament to the wonderful family man he was. Beyond the barber chair, he delighted in the simple joys of life. Those who knew Bill remember his wonderful sense of humor and infectious laughter. With a twinkle in his eye, he would often say, “I love to cut hair, cut up and cut grass,” his playful phrase encapsulating the joy he found in life’s small pleasures. An avid basketball enthusiast, Bill was a devoted fan of Indiana University, the Hauser Jets, and South Decatur, often found cheering with pride as he watched his grandchildren play the sport he loved. Evenings might find him enjoying the timeless comfort of The Andy Griffith Show, a gentle nod to simpler times.
His spiritual life was equally rich. A lifelong member and former deacon of the First Christian Church in Scottsburg, Bill’s faith was a cornerstone of his daily living and his unwavering commitment to community.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Susan Horn Calloway of Scottsburg, Indiana, with whom he shared a life filled with love and partnership. Their children—Brent Calloway and his wife Michelle, also of Scottsburg, and Amy Keller of Columbus, Indiana—carry forward their father’s legacy. Bill’s pride was evident in his five grandchildren: Jamison Keller, Gavin Keller, Grace Calloway, Luke Calloway, and Micah Calloway, who brought him immeasurable joy. He is also remembered by his sisters Lynda Collings and her husband Tom, and Cherlyn Helmbrecht, all of Scottsburg; as well as his sister-in-law Linda Mills and her husband Jeff, and brother-in-law William Horn, all residents of Scottsburg.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lyndon Calloway, and his mother, Christina Richey Calloway Bridgewater. Their memory lives on in the stories and hearts of those who knew Bill.
A graveside service to honor William “Bill” Calloway will take place on April 30, 2026, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Scottsburg Cemetery. Friends and family will gather to celebrate a life marked by devotion, laughter, and a sincere love for those around him.
Bill Calloway’s journey was one of quiet strength and profound impact. His legacy is etched into the spirit of Scottsburg, in the friendships he nurtured, the family he adored, and in the countless lives he touched with the simple act of caring. Though he has departed, the warmth of his presence endures—a beacon of love, kindness, and the enduring power of community.
